Massachusetts Values Oral Health, But Barriers Remain

Even with barriers like cost and access, we know that our teeth are important. In fact, the Health Policy Institute reports that 98 % of Massachusetts adults value oral health. And, 83% of respondents believe straight, bright teeth help you get ahead in life. Yet, many people still do not receive the regular, preventive dental care they need.

Cost remains the main reason why people don’t visit the dentist—which is why it’s so important that dental insurance plans like ours are designed to promote preventive care and avoid dental disease. Dental insurance plans like ours, in fact, specifically help you cover the cost of routine checkups, including cleanings, which are critical for improved oral health.

So what is the second most common reason people don’t go to the dentist in Massachusetts? Fear. Fear ranks second – and this held true across income groups.

At the same time, more than half of respondents had experienced pain in the last 12 months due to their teeth. More than half had also experienced difficulty biting or chewing due to their teeth.

Another notable set of results from the survey involved quality of life. Of the survey participants, 1 in 5 said they avoid smiling due to the condition of their mouth and teeth, and 1 in 5 also feel embarrassment.

Among low-income adults, 20% percent reduce social activities due to the condition of their mouth and teeth.

There are so many reasons to take care of your teeth. Your physical health, mental health and general quality of life can be affected by the state of your mouth.  Yet many of us are avoiding care when we shouldn’t. Don’t let fear hold you back from a healthy mouth.
