Delta Dental of Massachusetts Unveils New Plan for Seniors

Delta Dental of Massachusetts, the largest provider of dental benefits in the state, has unveiled a new affordable dental plan, Delta Dental PPO Value for Seniors to provide coverage for individuals age 65 and older.

Delta Dental of Massachusetts, the largest provider of dental benefits in the state, has unveiled a new affordable dental plan, Delta Dental PPO Value for Seniors to provide coverage for individuals age 65 and older. Most employer benefits plans end after retirement and many seniors who are accustomed to good dental care find it a struggle to afford insurance or services. The Delta Dental PPO Value for Seniors plan offers seniors whose primary residency is in Massachusetts 100 percent coverage of most preventive and diagnostic services provided by dentists in the Delta Dental PPO network – both in Massachusetts and nationwide.

For $259 – less than $0.75 per day -- seniors have access to 12 months of Delta Dental PPO Value for Seniors’ oral health coverage.

“Dental problems are a serious health risk that account for a growing number of emergency room visits each year; the difficulties seniors face in access to care and the Medicare coverage gap is often overlooked,” said Dr. Linda Vidone, Dental Director for Delta Dental of Massachusetts.  “As families gather for the holidays, it is nice time to discuss health care planning with loved ones. There’s a strong link between good oral health and one’s overall health.”

Today’s seniors will be the first generation to keep their natural teeth over their entire lifetime thanks to community water fluoridation, fluoride toothpastes and access to dental care as part of employer-sponsored health insurance.  However, economic factors, combined with higher risks for dental disease associated with long-term, chronic health conditions such as diabetes along with new research showing that dry mouth (xerostomia), a common side effect of prescription medication, exaggerates the risk for dental disease among seniors. Dental’s PPO Value for Seniors plan gives seniors access to preventive care so that they maintain good oral health well into retirement.

A dental insurance plan focused on preventing oral health disease, Delta Dental PPO Value for Seniors does not provide coverage for restorative care, like fillings and root canals. However, members who receive these types of services from Delta Dental PPO network dentists in Massachusetts will receive discounts of up to 45% off the cost of care. There are no discounts for restorative treatment provided by Delta Dental PPO dentists outside of Massachusetts.
