Delta Dental will match Massachusetts Dental Society’s donation to support local dental students struggling with food insecurity
DDMA will support food pantries at three Boston area dental schools — Harvard, Tufts, and Boston University — and challenges other insurance carriers to step up and join in the match
BOSTON — March 21, 2025— Delta Dental of Massachusetts, (DDMA), the leading dental benefits administrator in the state, announced today that it will match a grant made this week by the Massachusetts Dental Society in support of local dental students who are struggling with food insecurity. MDS’ grant provided $28,000 to the food pantries at three area dental schools — Boston University, Harvard University, and Tufts University. Delta Dental has pledged to match these donations in support of the dental workforce.
Erik Montlack, President of Delta Dental of Massachusetts, is challenging other carriers to join DDMA in pledging a matching donation.
“When we saw MDS’ announcement calling attention to the rising issue of food insecurity among dental students in Massachusetts, we knew that we wanted to be part of the solution,” said Montlack. “As a proud Massachusetts company, we’re committed to the communities we serve, and we understand the importance of supporting and investing in the dental workforce. I would challenge other Massachusetts carriers to also step up and match MDS’ donation in support of this important initiative.”
Earlier this week, MDS shared the announcement, noting that food costs have risen 23% in the last five years, and a recent survey revealed that 80% of students at one dental school would use a food pantry if available.
“It's a stark reality and deeply concerning that those who will become healthcare providers, the very future of our profession, face food insecurity. Lack of proper nutrition directly impacts their ability to learn and succeed,” said Abe Abdul, President of the Massachusetts Dental Society. “With the support of MDS, I was proud to help secure a grant for our dental students, and we appreciate Delta Dental of Massachusetts for also stepping up. We encourage more entities to join in supporting the next generation of dental professionals.”
